Warner Pacific University Supports DACA Recipients and Their Families
The fight to maintain protections for approximately 700,000 recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) has reached the Supreme Court of the United States. As we await the Court’s decision regarding the fate of DACA recipients, Warner Pacific University continues to support and stand with the courageous, brilliant, and industrious DACA recipients and their families.
As the first (and only) four-year Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) in Oregon, Warner Pacific educates dozens of students whose families are impacted by the impending decision from the high court. We know DACA recipients and their families make up an important and productive segment of our city and state, and we are better because of their significant contributions to our community.
The Department of Justice’s 2017 decision to rescind the DACA program, compounded by Congress’ failure to formulate and adopt a permanent solution, has created a devastatingly cruel and uncertain environment for DACA recipients and their families. As a Christ-centered higher education institution committed to investing in the formation and success of students from diverse backgrounds, Warner Pacific University stands on a Biblical mandate to care for the immigrant among us. We will continue to demonstrate care, hospitality, and protection for the most vulnerable in our society.
We urge the Supreme Court to uphold the lawfulness of DACA, which provides protection for recipients and their families. We urge members of Congress to pass permanent legislation to provide students, their family members, and our neighbors a pathway to citizenship.
We know these are complicated issues, yet it is incumbent on us to speak up for those who are impacted by the policies and processes perpetuating injustice.
